]]> For many families, the hardest part of the day happens in the first few minutes of it — the drop-off. Tears at the door, clinging arms, a wobbling lip that tugs at your heart as you head to work. If this sounds familiar, please know two things: it is completely normal, and it almost always gets better. Separation anxiety is not a sign that something is wrong. It’s actually a sign of something deeply right — a strong, loving attachment between you and your child.

Understanding why it happens, and having a few gentle strategies ready, can turn those difficult mornings into confident, cheerful goodbyes.

Why Separation Feels So Big

For a young child, the world is still learning to be predictable. When you leave, a toddler doesn’t yet fully trust that you’ll return — that understanding, called object permanence, is still developing. Add a new environment, a change in routine, or simply a tired or hungry morning, and big feelings are bound to bubble up. Separation anxiety tends to peak between roughly 8 months and 3 years, though it can appear at any age and often returns after vacations, illness, or other changes. It is a normal, healthy stage — not a setback.

Gentle Strategies That Really Help

Keep goodbyes short, warm, and consistent. It’s tempting to linger, hoping to soothe your child before you go — but long, drawn-out goodbyes often make the anxiety worse. A confident hug, a kiss, a cheerful “I love you, I’ll see you after snack time,” and a calm exit tells your child that this is safe and routine.

Create a special goodbye ritual. Children find enormous comfort in predictability. A little routine that’s the same every day — a secret handshake, three kisses, a wave from the same window — gives your child something reliable to hold onto.

Never sneak out. Slipping away while your child is distracted may avoid tears in the moment, but it can make separation harder over time. A clear, loving goodbye — even one with a few tears — builds more trust in the long run.

Talk about it ahead of time. On the drive in, describe what the day will look like: “First we’ll hang up your coat, then you’ll play with your friends, and after lunch and nap, I’ll be back to pick you up.” Connecting your return to a part of their day is easier for a young child to understand than a clock time.

Send a small comfort from home. A family photo, a beloved stuffed animal, or a note tucked in a lunchbox can be a reassuring reminder that you’re thinking of them.

Stay calm yourself. Children are remarkable readers of emotion. When you project calm confidence — “You’re going to have a great day” — your child borrows that confidence from you.

Here’s something that surprises many families: the tears usually stop within a few minutes of your leaving. Again and again, teachers watch a child who was crying at the door settle happily into play moments later.
