The year before kindergarten goes fast. If your child will start kindergarten next fall, this is the year to build the habits that make that first day easy. At Sunny Pointe Childcare Center in Northville, that year belongs to Ms. Shelley.
Meet Ms. Shelley
Ms. Shelley has taught our Pre-K and Young Fives room for 14 years. She holds degrees in both Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education, and she has taught kindergarten herself, so she knows exactly what kindergarten teachers hope to see on day one. Over her career she has helped hundreds of children get ready for that step.
“Working in Pre-K is very rewarding. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to get to know each child individually and as part of the whole group through one-on-one learning and group activities. My absolute favorite part is watching them develop socially, emotionally, and academically throughout the year. It is amazing how much growth occurs, and I get a front-row seat.” — Ms. Shelley
Learning One-on-One and as a Group
Kindergarten readiness is more than letters and numbers. Children also need to follow a routine, take turns, listen during group time and work through small problems on their own. In Ms. Shelley’s room, children learn both ways: individually, at their own pace, and together as a class.
Our preschool assistant, Ms. Cindy, has been part of the classroom for about ten years. She focuses on the social side:
“One of the things I enjoy most is helping children work through problems and build their social skills. I love helping them learn more about themselves, how to express themselves, and how to treat others with kindness and respect.” — Ms. Cindy
A Full Day That Fits Working Families
Our preschool day runs from 7:30am to 5:30pm, with circle time, centers, art, outdoor play, lunch and rest built in. See our post on a day in our preschool room for the hour-by-hour schedule.
