New routines, cooler mornings, and sometimes a few tears are all part of fall at a Northville childcare center. If your little one clings a bit at drop-off, you’re not alone, and it doesn’t mean anything is wrong. Separation worries are a normal, healthy stage of development, especially for toddlers and preschoolers.

Our teachers at Sunny Pointe Childcare Center have helped Northville families through a lot of goodbyes since 1991. Here are the five tips we see make the biggest difference.

1. Keep goodbyes short and sweet

A hug, a cheerful “I’ll see you after snack,” and then go. Lingering, or coming back for “one more” hug, usually makes the goodbye harder for both of you. A calm, confident exit tells your child this is a safe place to be.

2. Create a goodbye ritual

A special high-five, a secret handshake, or a kiss on the palm they can “keep” all day gives your child something predictable to hold on to. Do it the same way every morning.

3. Talk about the day ahead

On the drive in, mention one fun thing waiting for them: painting, outdoor play, a favorite song at circle time, or seeing a friend. Looking forward to something shifts the focus from leaving you to what they’ll get to do.

4. Stay consistent

Arriving around the same time and following the same morning steps (shoes, backpack, cubby, hug, wave) helps little ones feel secure. Kids handle change best when the routine around it stays familiar.

5. Trust the process

Most children settle within a few minutes of a parent leaving, often faster than parents expect. If you’re worried, just ask. Our staff are happy to send a quick photo or update through our parent app so you can get on with your day with peace of mind.

Why familiar faces matter

One of the biggest things that eases drop-off is seeing the same caring teacher every morning. At Sunny Pointe, many of our teachers have been with us for more than 20 years. That consistency helps children (and parents!) feel at home, which is exactly what we’ve aimed for since 1991.
