Is your little one having a hard time saying goodbye in the morning? You’re not alone. Separation anxiety is a normal part of growing up. It often shows up again after summer break, a new classroom or a change at home. The good news is that a few simple habits can make mornings calmer for both of you.
1. Keep goodbyes short and loving
A hug, a kiss and a cheerful “See you after snack time!” works better than a long goodbye. When a goodbye drags on, children tend to get more anxious.
2. Never sneak out
Slipping away can feel easier in the moment, but it can hurt trust. Always say goodbye, even if there are tears.
3. Create a goodbye ritual
A special handshake, a high-five at the door or a wave from the window gives your child something to count on every day.
4. Talk about the day ahead
At home, talk about the fun parts of the day: friends, art projects, outdoor play. Let your child know when you’ll be back, using times they understand, like “after nap.”
5. Bring a piece of home
A family photo or a small comfort item in their cubby can be very reassuring.
6. Stay calm and confident
Children pick up on our feelings. If you feel sure they’re in good hands, they’re more likely to feel that way too.
7. Keep a steady routine
Regular bedtimes, relaxed mornings and the same drop-off order each day help children feel secure.
Most children settle in within minutes of their parent leaving. Our teachers are always happy to send a quick update if you’d like peace of mind. It usually takes a few weeks for mornings to get easier, so be patient.
